Short-term Programmes

Short-term Abroad Partnership (SAP)

What is SAP?

Summer Abroad Partnership programmes are a series of programmes organised through HKU’s collaboration with partnership institutions. You can enjoy partner benefits such as fee-reduction, priority registration, requirement waiver and potential external scholarships through joining a SAP programme.

SAP – Application

To participate in one of the programmes listed under SAP, you will first need to obtain the nomination offer from International Affairs Office before admittance to any of the programmes. You would then be considered for nomination to one of the SAP programmes.

After you accept a nomination offer by paying a deposit of HKD2,000 (please refer to Deposit Payment Instruction) and submit the payment slip to the online application system by the given deadline, you will be sent the instructions on how to complete the application to the host institution for admission, housing, visas, etc. All of these steps take time and you are advised to research the programmes and plan ahead in advance.

**Note: The deposit is refundable upon your completion of the programme and the submission of your report. Under normal circumstances, no deposit shall be refunded if you withdraw from the programme after accepting the offer or if you fail to complete the programme.

SAP – Available host institutions

We have three rounds for SAP in total. Note that we offer different host institutions for different rounds. You may refer to the institution list on our webpage and take note of the application timeline at:

https://aal.hku.hk/studyabroad/avail_program.php?pid=9&type=outgoing.

SAP – Teaching mode

Some SAP programme in Summer 2021 are yet to be confirmed if the programme will be conducted in virtual or physical format. You are reminded that the teaching mode and availability of the programme is subject to change. Please visit the programme websites for more information on the latest teaching arrangement.

SAP – Eligibility

Good academic standing: students with a CGPA 3.0 or above have a relatively higher chance of getting a placement in the programme.

Please refer to the programme details as well as the eligibility criteria at:

https://aal.hku.hk/studyabroad/avail_program.php?pid=9&type=outgoing

SAP – Programme choices

As the application is rolling, you will only be able to apply to the system once. Students could select a maximum of five choices for SAP. Therefore, we would encourage you to consider filling in all five choices in your application to increase your chance of nomination. However, you may only apply to one SAP programme.

You will be considered in the list according to your order of preference, i.e., your first choice will be considered before others. Alternative offers may be given if you cannot meet the eligibility requirements. In case you are not allocated to any programme options from your five choices, you may be considered for an offer in the next placement exercise.

SAP – No GPA MBBS

For MBBS students, please combine the transcript or portal exam result page so that we could assess both accordingly.

SAP – No GPA Year 1

In your SAP application, you will be asked to submit academic results. Scholarship funding and placement will be evaluated based on your results in the first semester during the academic year of the application. When you apply, please submit a screenshot of your SIS record, which shows the list of courses you are taking. You should expect to receive the nomination offer after the announcement of your first semester exam results.

SAP – English qualification

TOEFL/IELTS is applicable if it is part of the programme-specific requirement.

Most SAP programmes have waived the English proficiency requirements for HKU students. As HKU students, you do not need to provide TOEFL, IELTS or other qualifications to prove your English language proficiency, but you are still expected to meet the English proficiency requirement to fully benefit from the learning experience.

If the programme you apply for requires proof of your English proficiency, you will need to present your qualification in your SAP application. If you do not yet meet the English qualification required by the host institution, you should specify the expected date of your result in your application. You may upload a document explaining your case into the ‘required document’ field.

May I transfer credits for SAP programme?

For questions related to credit transfer, please contact your faculty directly as your faculty is the approval authority for how the courses you took at the host university will be credited towards your HKU degree.

SAP – Final Year Eligibility

If you are in your final year of undergraduate study, you can still join a summer programme within the last academic year. Financial assistance and insurance coverage are still open to final year undergraduate students with restrictions, subject to whether the programme takes place during the time when your HKU student status is still valid.

If you plan to transfer credits that contribute to your degree, you will need to crosscheck with your faculty on the arrangement to facilitate your timely graduation.

SAP – Drop-out Arrangement

We recognise that many of you may be considering other summer opportunities along with your SAP application. If you are offered nomination to a SAP programme, you will be required to pay a refundable deposit of HKD2,000 to the University within one week to accept your offer. The deposit will be refunded upon completion of the programme and submission of your reports. If you drop out of the programme to take up other opportunities, the deposit will unfortunately not be refundable.

If you would like to consider both opportunities, you may want to submit your application at a later time, but please be reminded that you are encouraged to apply early to take advantage of the wide range of programme choices available.
