I exchanged at the legal studies department at the University of California, Berkeley, in Semester 1, 2023-2024.

The University of California, Berkeley is a public land-grant research university in Berkeley, California. It was established in 1868 and is the state’s first land-grant university. It is also a founding member of the Association of American Universities and is the founding campus of the University of California system. Berkeley has the most top-ranked departments nationally and is one of the top universities worldwide.

What impressed me most was Berkeley’s thirty-two libraries. Together, the libraries contain more than 13 million volumes and cover over 12 acres (4.9 hectares) of land, forming the fourth-largest collegiate library system in the nation. The vast expanse of Berkeley’s libraries created an atmosphere conducive to learning and exploration. Whether I needed to conduct in-depth research, study for exams, or simply immerse myself in the world of literature, the libraries offered a serene and intellectually stimulating environment. The abundance of books, journals, and other scholarly resources ensured that I had access to a wide range of information, allowing me to pursue my academic endeavours with ease.

Engaging in legal research in a different jurisdiction was an incredible experience that allowed me to deepen my understanding of diversity and the golden thread that underpins the rule of law. It provided me with the opportunity to explore and critically evaluate legal principles and practices in a new context while also expanding my legal knowledge and skills. Through this experience, I achieved academic excellence in my law study.

During my time at the University of California, Berkeley, I had the privilege of interacting with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. These interactions were extremely valuable, as they allowed me to exchange creative and novel ideas and to think about issues from new perspectives. The ability to think outside the box and to analyse problems in a diverse way is an important quality for a good lawyer. Through these interactions, I learned about various legal systems and cultural practices that differed from my own. This allowed me to develop a more nuanced understanding of the law and how it is applied in different contexts. It also gave me a deeper appreciation for the role that culture and social norms play in shaping legal systems.

In addition, engaging in legal research in a different jurisdiction allowed me to develop my research and analytical skills. It required me to undertake extensive research and analysis while also considering the wider societal and cultural implications of the legal issues at hand. This experience was incredibly challenging but also incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to develop a deep appreciation for the intricacies of the law and the importance of context in shaping legal outcomes.

During my time in the small town of Berkeley, I not only had the chance to immerse myself in a different environment but also discovered new aspects of my own character. One of the most memorable experiences I had was taking the bus to the Berkeley Marina to watch the sunset by the sea. This became a regular activity for me whenever I found myself with some free time. As I sat by the marina, witnessing the sun gradually dip below the horizon, I realised that joy and contentment can be derived from the simplest of things that do not require a hefty price tag. The beauty of nature, the calming sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the vibrant hues painted across the sky during the sunset became my source of solace and happiness. It reminded me that true pleasure lies in appreciating the beauty that surrounds us rather than constantly seeking material possessions. This exchange experience in Berkeley allowed me to reflect on my own desires and aspirations. It gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into my own preferences and understand what truly brings me satisfaction in life.

In conclusion, my exchange at the University of California, Berkeley, has been a transformative experience that has shaped me both academically and personally. Engaging in legal research in a different jurisdiction allowed me to delve into the complexities of the law and understand the importance of diversity in the legal field. Interacting with students from diverse cultural backgrounds expanded my perspectives and enhanced my ability to think critically and creatively. The mentorship programme provided me with invaluable guidance and deepened my understanding of American society. The opportunity to explore the beautiful town of Berkeley and reflect on my own desires and aspirations further enriched my experience. My time at the University of California, Berkeley, will forever hold a special place in my heart as a chapter of immense personal and academic development.
