In this outgoing experience, I got to spare my fall semester at Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris). It is one of the top institutions in the world and is known to be particularly prestigious in Political Sciences and International Relations studies. It has long welcomed international students with positive feedback from my colleagues who have been there. Majoring in government and laws, I am passionate about leading a legal career or working in the public sector in the future. As I learnt that many alumni from the institution have become outstanding civil servants in France, including presidents, prime ministers and other heads of state, I have always wished to study at Sciences Po and have a taste of this top-tier education experience. It was truly an honour for me when I was granted the opportunity to partake in this exchange program and immerse myself in the rich academic environment of Sciences Po.

During my time at Sciences Po, I had the privilege of attending six rigorous courses offered by the host institution. The academic schedule was demanding, leaving me with little spare time to engage in extracurricular activities or join student clubs. However, I did manage to participate in several conferences and dialogues organised by the institution, which provided valuable insights and opportunities to engage with experts in the field.

Undoubtedly, one of the most significant challenges I faced during my exchange was the language barrier. I vividly remember my first day in Paris, where I found myself in a situation where I had to ask the bus driver for assistance in purchasing a ticket. With limited knowledge of French at the time, I relied on a combination of Google Translate and hand gestures to communicate my needs. Overcoming the language barrier required patience, perseverance, and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone. As time passed, I dedicated myself to learning the basics of the French language, gradually improving my ability to communicate and navigate daily life in Paris.

Despite the challenges, my experience at Sciences Po Paris was incredibly rewarding and transformative. The opportunity to study at such a prestigious institution, surrounded by brilliant minds and immersed in a different academic culture, enriched my understanding of political sciences. I really enjoyed doing group presentations and communicating with classmates. Working closely with my peers, each of whom brought their unique perspectives and experiences to the table, allowing for a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge. The diversity within our group fostered a rich learning environment, where we not only gained insights into political sciences but also had the privilege of learning about each other’s personal stories and cultural backgrounds. This intercultural exchange not only broadened our horizons but also nurtured a sense of empathy and appreciation for the multitude of perspectives that exist in the world.

I also spared a lot of time exploring this new place with a completely different culture. It is fascinating. Embarking on numerous city walks allowed me to intimately explore the city’s enchanting streets and discover its hidden gems. Paris, with its rich history and iconic landmarks, provided an ideal backdrop for my explorations. I took leisurely strolls along the Seine River, marvelling at the breathtaking views of the city’s renowned bridges, the Eiffel Tower and the majestic Notre Dame Cathedral. Wandering through the charming neighbourhoods of Montmartre and Le Marais, I revelled in the architectural splendour and soaked in the unique atmosphere that each district had to offer. Every corner I turned in Paris seemed to unveil a new discovery. I found myself captivated by the intricate details of the city’s historic buildings, the inviting aroma wafting from cosy cafes, and the lively ambience of bustling street markets. The vibrant mix of sights, sounds, and smells created an immersive experience that made me feel truly connected to the heartbeat of the city. These city walks not only allowed me to appreciate the physical beauty of Paris but also provided a window into its rich cultural tapestry. I stumbled upon charming bookstores, art galleries, and boutique shops, each showcasing a distinct aspect of Parisian culture.

Observing the locals and lifestyle of the French, I gained a profound appreciation for the importance of work-life balance in their culture. Witnessing how the French prioritise their free time for socialising and enjoying life was truly inspiring, especially coming from a fast-paced city environment. It served as a valuable life lesson for me and made me reflect on the significance of finding a harmonious equilibrium between work and personal life. Another captivating aspect of French culture has to be their deep appreciation for the arts. In France, there is a remarkable emphasis placed on supporting and promoting artistic endeavours. As a teen resident in the European Union between the age of 18- 25, I had the privilege of accessing significant discounts on various art activities. Museums like the Louvre and the Orsay Museum were easily accessible and often free, while tickets to operas, musicals, and other cultural events were reasonably priced, often costing only ten euros. This affordability and inclusivity in the arts sector truly impressed me. Coming from a city like Hong Kong, where artistic opportunities can be limited, my time in Paris was a cherished treasure. The abundance of world-class works of art and cultural experiences available in Paris was awe-inspiring. I deeply valued the accessibility and affordability of the arts in France, as it ensured that everyone, regardless of their background or financial means, had equal opportunities to engage with and learn about the country’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The impact of my exchange experience extends far beyond academics. One of the most significant transformations I underwent was becoming more open-minded and embracing other cultures. It was not a superficial change but rather a genuine appreciation and understanding that developed through my interactions with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Throughout my exchange journey, I had the privilege of meeting people from every continent, forging meaningful friendships that transcended borders and challenged my comfort zone. Engaging in discussions about our cultural differences and sharing life experiences fostered mutual respect and broadened my perspectives. These conversations not only deepened my understanding of the world but also enriched my own personal growth.
