Lee, Tsz Pui (Exchange, Year 3)
National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore is one of the world’s leading universities, with a rigorous academic culture and global outlook. The university adopts a multidisciplinary approach in its teaching, encouraging students to explore a diverse array of perspectives and widen their horizons as global citizens. My experience at NUS was eye-opening, allowing me to develop both academically and personally.

Studying at NUS was academically rigorous but also intellectually stimulating, allowing me to challenge past preconceptions and develop nuanced ideas. The opportunity for me to study courses beyond medicine was enlightening, as I could delve deeply into different areas of knowledge such as classical music, French, psychology, social work, and the Bollywood film industry. In particular, studying French allowed me to develop greater cultural awareness and appreciation for my own culture as I could perceive the world through a different lens. The ability to connect with others around the world gave me immense satisfaction that I had never felt before. The enormous gratification I felt from language learning later led me to learn Korean as well. On the other hand, my course on classical music composition was also highly meaningful as I was able to further my musical passions. By learning more about various compositional concepts such as harmonic progression, voice leading, and texture, I was able to combine such concepts with my experience in orchestral and solo violin playing to compose classical music, a process which I found highly rewarding. By working on projects with local and international students alike, I came to realise how NUS students were not only intelligent and hardworking but also highly outspoken and assertive in expressing their ideas. It was a pleasure not only to work with them but also to make friends and establish lasting friendships.

Apart from academic studies, my social life as an exchange student at NUS was equally gratifying. As one of the most international universities worldwide, I had the privilege of meeting many students from all around the world with diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Meeting friends from both Eastern and Western cultures, I noticed the beauty of how different cultures could coexist peacefully with mutual appreciation and respect. Constantly being exposed to a multicultural environment made me increasingly interested in learning about others’ cultures as well as sharing my own, allowing me to adopt a more global outlook and become more receptive to different ideas.

Throughout my exchange in Singapore, I was able to meet many like-minded friends who were not only talented and intelligent but also extremely humble, friendly, and grounded. By exploring the bustling city of Singapore together, we created many beautiful and unforgettable memories. From the extravagance of Marina Bay and the vibrance of hawker centres to the cultural richness of Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street, we explored the diverse facets of Singaporean society and immersed ourselves in this cosmopolitan city. Bringing our diverse backgrounds and beliefs together, we explored the many treasures of the city with colourful and eclectic lenses.

Apart from academic and social life, my exchange in Singapore also sprouted my personal development and allowed me to learn many important life lessons. Living alone in a foreign country and tackling different situations independently allowed me to develop increased maturity and emotional resilience, giving me more time for self-reflection and self-improvement. I was able to join many extracurricular activities at NUS to further my interests, such as the NUS International Chess Club and Recreational Badminton Club. Despite having a heavy academic workload, I was surprised to see most NUS students devoting large amounts of time to developing their interests, many of which perfecting their craft to formidable heights, precisely embodying the spirit of “work hard, play hard.” Their emphasis on holistic development and work-life balance inspires me to maintain my passions and aspirations throughout my academic and professional career.

Overall, my exchange experience at the National University of Singapore was truly unforgettable and life-changing. I returned with a vastly different set of values and many newfound interests, which I aspire to continue with hereafter. I also made many enduring friendships with students all around the world, which I greatly cherish.
